Today I walked outside and felt overcome by the heat. Leaving the cool air conditioning for my morning quiet time honestly felt foolish.
But as I settled in, maybe ten minutes later, I noticed how refreshing the breeze felt, my nerves calming with the sounds of nature going about its morning routine. I fell into step with their song, my morning routine dancing in harmony. I felt myself breathe in the morning smells, each shift of the wind bringing a new experience to stimulate my creativity.
I could have walked back inside when the contrast of my artificially cooled house collided with the heat outside. I would have been more comfortable. I could have turned on my fan to feel the air move. Often I choose that, but this morning I’m wondering what it costs me to choose my comfort over nature. There are magical benefits that can only happen when I start my day with creation. I believe God weaves hidden gifts into our nervous system when we sync with nature each morning.
Some of the best discoveries are just outside the reach of our comfort. Until we push ourselves, challenge ourselves, and intentionally power through, we will never know what we’re missing. Maybe you need someone to give you the nudge today. Maybe you have forgotten how life-giving nature can be. Make that shift and bring your journal. I bet you’re shocked at what happens when you unplug and get a little uncomfortable. Pro-tip: bring a beverage and find some shade. We’re adventurers, not heroes.
